A Creative Take on Pollinator Week: Nature Photography Workshop in Austin
As an amateur photographer and social media agency owner, I’m always looking for creative ways to grow as a content creator and deliver better-quality social media content for my clients. This week, I found the perfect opportunity to do just that.
I attended the Pollinator Week Nature Photography Workshop hosted at the Austin Central Library by Nature in the City ATX, and I walked away reminded of how lucky I am to live in such a beautiful place, where nature and public spaces are woven into the fabric of our city.
Led by Amelia DeVivo from the City of Austin, the workshop was perfectly timed with National Pollinator Week, a celebration of the butterflies, bees, birds, and other pollinators that quietly shape the beauty of our world. The focus wasn’t just on capturing nature, but on storytelling through photography. We explored technical skills like color, lighting, depth of field, and the rule of thirds, but more importantly, we discussed how photography can become a form of advocacy, a way to showcase and protect what we love about Austin.
With our cameras in hand, we were invited to explore the lush greenery surrounding the Austin Central Library and the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail. Our creative prompt? Find a compelling subject in nature and tell its story through our lens.
What I appreciated most about this event was how it brought together people of all skill levels who share a love for Austin. We slowed down, looked more closely, and focused on the small details. It reminded me why I love photography, not just for Instagram or a client campaign, but to preserve beauty, find new perspectives, and connect with the world around me.
Workshops like this are a true gift to local creatives. I left feeling refreshed and re-inspired, with a few new techniques to try and a renewed sense of curiosity. Whether you’re a content creator, hobby photographer, or simply someone who loves nature, get involved.
