Why I Joined the WCA Board and Why You Should Join WCA Too

Joining the 2025-2026 Board for the Women Communicators of Austin

Women Communicators of Austin

Starting a social media agency is exciting, but it also comes with a lot of questions, pivots, and moments of doubt. I was craving mentorship, connection, and that sense of belonging that turns ambition into momentum. I knew I needed people who understood that journey and I found exactly that in Women Communicators of Austin.

At my very first WCA event I felt a sense of belonging. The women were welcoming, the conversations were real, and the energy in the room felt like a creative heartbeat. It wasn’t about competition, it was about collaboration with industry peers. Women helping women. Seasoned pros sharing insights. New voices being celebrated. I walked away not just with new ideas, but with new people in my corner.

The more events I joined—like Freelance Austin, leader lunches, and the unforgettable Get Smart conference in the fall or Banner Brunch in the spring—the more I realized how much this group could help me carve my path forward. These weren’t just events; they were the peer support and fuel I had been needing. I learned, I grew, and I found the confidence to keep pushing forward in a space that can often feel isolating for entrepreneurs.

WCA has been around since 1929, and the legacy of this organization speaks volumes. From peer mentoring and scholarships to thought-provoking panels, leadership opportunities, and community support, WCA is rooted in lifting women up and giving them the tools and relationships to build their dream careers. Whether you're in journalism, PR, marketing, design, freelancing, or social media (like me), WCA offers more than just resources, it offers relationships that matter.

I’m beyond honored to now serve on the 2025–2026 Board of Directors. This is my chance to give back to a group that has given me so much. As I continue navigating the ups and downs of running a social media agency, I honestly don’t know how I’d be doing it without the support, insight, connections, and inspiration I’ve found here. WCA has helped me shape my business, my mindset, and my future and now I’m excited to help shape what’s next for others too.

If you're a communicator in Austin, whether you're starting out, reinventing, or scaling your career, I hope you'll come to an event. And as the new Vice President of Programs, I’ll always be on the lookout for freelance superstars to host our monthly meetups and communications leaders to speak at our monthly leader lunches. If you’d like to submit a request to speak at one of our events, send me an email at brystal@mckeemedia.net.
